We Are Making Energy Visible
How the PARMENIDES project is empowering communities through real-time energy insights
In the picturesque village of Gasen, nestled in Austria’s Styrian hills, the PARMENIDES project is bringing energy awareness directly to the public. A new public screen displaying a live energy dashboard will soon be installed in the town, offering residents and visitors a real-time look at how their community generates, consumes, and stores electricity.
Designed to be both engaging and informative, the dashboard presents key local energy indicators in a clear, easy-to-understand format. It updates continuously, showing trends over the past 24 hours, 7 days, and the last month. Visitors can follow the full energy journey, where electricity is produced, how it’s used, and how much is saved or stored.
The dashboard visualizes local power flows from the village’s photovoltaic systems, clearly marked with solar panel icons. Any electricity that needs to be sourced externally is indicated by a power pylon symbol, making it easy to see when and why the community relies on the broader grid. Locally generated solar power can be used instantly, stored in the community’s battery, or directed toward charging electric vehicles, maximizing efficiency and local self-sufficiency.
At the bottom of the screen, a set of key performance indicators offers deeper insights. Two standout metrics include self-sufficiency (how much of the community’s energy demand is met by its own generation) and self-consumption (how much solar energy is used directly on site rather than exported). These indicators are crucial for understanding and improving the community’s energy autonomy.
To further connect technology with purpose, the dashboard also displays environmental benefits, such as avoided CO₂ emissions and the number of trees saved, making the impact of clean energy locally tangible.
This initiative is more than a technical installation; it’s a community touchpoint. With this public dashboard, PARMENIDES is turning energy data into a shared story, strengthening local engagement, encouraging sustainable behavior, and setting a new standard for transparency in energy use.
